Millvale – Taproom

Located just outside the Pittsburgh city limits, this small brick building is the heart and soul of the Strange Roots experience. Though our brewing operation has outgrown the 2 BBL system we started out with here, we are proud to remain a member of the vibrant Millvale community. Visit the original taproom and outdoor beer garden, designed with farmhouse stables in mind to create an old-world escape you won’t find anywhere else.

Bourbon La Peinture

8% ABV

A distinctively tart and complex American sour, reminiscent of a West Flanders style ale fermented with fresh cherry juice and local yeast. Aged in French oak red wine casks then matured in fresh Bourbon barrels. Notes of bright tart cherry, candied blue and purple fruit, cotton candy, brown sugar, oak, vanilla, tobacco, finishing with a subtle leathery funk

Brewers Tap: Old School Pale ale

7% ABV

IPA brewed with Centennial hops and dry hopped with Simcoe hops. Notes of caramel malt, soft candied grapefruit, orange citrus pith and pine.

Hidden Hand

6.2% ABV

Puncheon barrel fermented farmhouse ale. Notes of tart ripe peach juice, peach fuzz, apricot, meyer lemon, subtle hay, tropical undertones, finishing with a dry soft acidity.

Rye’m & Season

5.8% ABV

Rye sour with notes of dark cocoa, cinnamon, soft spice, crisp tart apple, finishing with subtle malty undertones and pineapple.

The Koel – Aid Concord

8.4% ABV

Cask aged beer blended with fresh concord juice.

Hand selected old stock brown ale (aged 3-4 years) blended with young stock red ale (aged 1-2 years). Notes of soft acidity, dark chocolate, raisin, oak, black currant, cherry, and plum.

Zoinks!

6.7% ABV

Wild IPA brewed with Columbus and dry hopped with Amarillo and Simcoe hops. Fermented atop orange sherbet, marshmallow, and orange zest. Notes of zesty orange, creamy rich marshmallow, soft citrus pith, finishing with a soft resin undertone.

Goedenacht

8.5% ABV

Farmhouse ale brewed with apples, orange blossom honey, coriander and fermented with Brettanomyces Claussenii. Notes of crisp yellow apple, pear, and vibrant undertones of honey.

Hidden Hand

6.2% ABV

Puncheon barrel fermented farmhouse ale. Notes of tart ripe peach juice, peach fuzz, apricot, meyer lemon, subtle hay, tropical undertones, finishing with a dry soft acidity.

Infinite Hibernation 2018

9.6% ABV

This year’s Infinite Hibernation was created using selected casks of spontaneously fermented beer from 2017 and refermented in bourbon casks with homemade molasses and locally sourced honey. Aromas of molasses, American Oak, brown sugar dominate, with subtle notes of fig, raisin, dates and very mild leather. Flavors of honey-bourbon sweetness, stone fruit and red grape (Malbec), are assertive, with characteristics reminiscent of Pedro Ximenez sherry. The soft acidity with a sweet/sour affect provides a finish that is attenuated and rich, but with a dry tannic residual.

Queen of the Yellow Dolls

7% ABV

Mixed culture farmhouse ale fermented with Western Pennsylvania yellow watermelon from Shenot farms. Notes of must, straw, white tea and vibrant melon.

Ragnarok

8.1% ABV

Equal parts Strong ale, Scottish ale and Viking metal concert. Ale fermented with elderberries, black currant, red raspberry, and black cherry juice. Notes of dark fruits, red fruit jam, accompanied by smokey undertones, earthiness, and peat.

The Balloonist

7.9% ABV

Sour golden strong ale brewed with orange peel. Notes of fresh apple and pear accompanied by bright citrus and honey.

Spontaneously fermented sour ale aged in Pinot Noir casks for 1 year, aged in Cognac casks for 1 year and bottle conditioned for 1 year. Notes of currant, stone fruit, leather, oak, and earthy truffle.
